Casa de Moneda

La Casa de Moneda de Mexico (Mexican Mint) is the oldest coin in North America. It was established in 1535 by Antonio de Mendoza, a Spanish viceroy, on behalf of the Spanish Crown who wanted to create the first currency in the Americas. It is also the national currency of Mexico, supported by The Bank of Mexico, which produces both circulating coins and currency for the country, as well as bullion coins. The Mexican Mint is located in Mexico City.

Specifications

The 1 oz Silver Libertad BU coin was first introduced in 1982 and has been produced annually since its introduction. The coins are produced at La Casa de Moneda de México, the oldest mint in North America. Each year of issue has different print runs. These silver coins are issued in different sizes and finishes. The front of the coin depicts the coat of arms of Mexico. The back of the coin depicts the Angel of Victory with the Mexican volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl in the background.

The design of the Winged Victory image was slightly modified in 1996 to show a three-quarter side profile. Therefore, the coins produced from 1982-1995 have the original angel design.
In 2000, the front design was changed to show the current Mexican national coat of arms with 10 previous versions of this symbol surrounding it.
