The Athenian owl was inspired by the Tetradrachm of ancient Greece. That coin had a weight of 17.2 g and was worth 4 drachmas, the Greek currency. The coin had the Greek goddess Athena on one side and the owl of Athens on the other. The owl symbolises wisdom and truth. According to mythology, the owl sat on Athena's shoulder and looked at her blind side, so that Athena was always able to see the whole truth: Alethia Orno Eternia, translated to 'Truth, honour and forever'. The silver Athenian owl of Niue is produced by SilverTowne.
